Working at Williams-Sonoma, we get introduced to many things, such as amazing cooking techniques, ground-breaking new chefs or even a newly developed product that impresses us. Every so often, it’s something better.
Share Our Strength is a nonprofit organization that helps to end childhood hunger in America. Williams-Sonoma has partnered with its No Kid Hungry® Campaign to supply nutritious food to kids in need and teach families how to cook healthy, affordable meals. We both were introduced to Share our Strength differently – Bianca was introduced to them at our yearly conference by talking with the representatives from Share our Strength, while Mia got the opportunity to work on store signage that was promoting the organization.
We found the facts about childhood hunger very heartbreaking; all we could do is want to help. The Williams-Sonoma stores were taking part by selling select products with proceeds going directly to Share our Strength, as well as taking donations at the register. But what could we do? Around our office regular food events have allowed us to get together and celebrate food. Why not do just that — but also host a bake sale and raise money for a wonderful cause?
First, we had to find a place to hold the bake sale. We decided to participate in a monthly farmers’ market near the office. We wanted to hold our bake sale at a high traffic location – more people means more awareness. Second, we thought: What should we bake? Who wanted to help us bake? These questions answered themselves as we began to plan our bake sale.
Our fellow co-workers were more than willing to bake a batch of brownies, cookies, mini pies, cupcakes and more. Some are not bakers, so they volunteered some time to help set up or help us sell. We were lucky enough to receive help from one of our visual merchandiser to set up our table. We also created signs with some help from our our intern. Most importantly, the majority of them helped by donating their money to purchase an afternoon snack.
We asked people for a $1 to $2 donation for each item – most gave even more. They easily bought our abundance of baked goods:
- Mini Apple And Mini Blueberry Pies
- Rice Krispy Treats
- Granola Cookie Bars
- Hello Dolly Bars
- Butterscotch Cookies With Brown Butter Frosting
- Gluten Free Pumpkin Sesame Bars
- Brownies
- Lemony Sugar Cookies
- “Chewy” Double Chocolate Cookies
- Oatmeal Coconut Cranberry Toffee Chocolate Chip Cookie
- Halloween Mix
- Halloween Cupcakes
- S’mores Brownies
It turned out so fun and very cute – we cannot wait to do it again! We raised over $600 in about 2 hours. Amazing! What’s even better, after submitting our donations online during the month of October, Duncan-Hines®, partner of Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale, will be matching our donation for a grand total of $1200 for Share Our Strength. We couldn’t be prouder.
This is just the first step to helping out Share Our Strength. We plan to make this a yearly event, maybe even semi-annual. To find out ways you can get involved or ways to give, visit www.strength.org.
