Soon, many of us will be celebrating Easter. Whether you’re hosting an elegant holiday meal or keeping things simple with your family and close friends, Easter Sunday is worthy of something special at the center your dinner table. Dress things up a bit with one of these simple but elegant do-it-yourself Easter centerpieces, using a few items you may already have on hand and a few inexpensive craft store supplies.
Here’s what you need to pull it off:
- 1 large package of raffia
- 1 package of paper Easter basket grass filling
- Several faux eggs (craft stores have these)
- Ribbon
- Scrap of fabric or a cloth napkin
Plus one of the following:
- Wire basket
- Cake stand or plate
- Hurricane vase
For this first centerpiece, I used my cake stand as the base for a bird’s nest that I made with raffia. To create the nest, simply pull a chunk (for lack of a better word) of raffia out of the package, keeping the strands together. Twist the entire bundle like you’re wringing out a towel, and shape it into a circle the size of the outside perimeter of your cake stand. Wrap the ends around itself and tuck them under. The raffia tends to get a little unruly and may come undone. If this happens, secure loose pieces hair pins or floral pins.
In the center I placed a small store-bought nest on a small scrap of fabric and placed several eggs inside of the nest.
You can make this simple centerpiece in less than 10 minutes!
The next centerpiece (above) is almost identical to the first one, but instead I used a vintage wire egg basket that I already had on hand to hold the nest.
The basket contained the raffia nicely — no pins needed for this one.
For the last centerpiece, I used a tall and wide glass hurricane vase, adding a layer of paper Easter grass in the bottom portion of the vase. On top of the grass, I made a nest with raffia (as described above) to fit inside the vase. I placed a few faux eggs in the nest and tied a blue gingham ribbon around the top of the vase.
Again, this centerpiece was finished in under ten minutes. I probably spent the most time trying to get the bow tied just right!
A few tips:
- For a larger table, make several centerpieces and space them out so everyone can enjoy them.
- Look for items around your house that can be used to hold a bird’s nest. Vases, baskets, bowls, plates, cake stands, pie plates, platters and jars are just a few examples.
- For a larger impact, make several nests in various sizes, at staggered heights, and group them together.
Happy Easter!
