Happy National Waffle Day! Today marks the anniversary of the first waffle iron patent issued 148 years ago in 1869. Celebrate this genius creation by serving waffles hot and fresh from the iron (we recommend following these five guidelines for best results when you use a waffle maker). Don’t twiddle your thumbs while you wait; instead, we suggest you make one of the topping ideas below to truly gild the lily.
Topping Idea #1: Yes Pecan!
You know what’s better than a pat of butter on that waffle? A pat of butter enhanced with rich, buttery pecan halves, maple syrup and—if you’re really going for an over-the-top pecan pie effect—our signature Pecan Pumpkin Butter.
Topping Idea #2: Peaches and Cream
If it’s a hard candy flavor, it probably deserves to be a waffle topping, too. Simmer peach slices with 1/2 cup of sugar and 1/4 cup of water soft and syrupy, about 10 to 15 minutes. Top with whipped cream.
Topping Idea #3: Waffles Benedict
Should your heart beat for savory treats over their sweet counterparts, bust out the waffle iron to make a version of eggs Benedict. Top a waffle with lightly grilled ham, a sunny-side-up fried egg, and hollandaise sauce.
Topping Idea #4: Waffle Ice Cream Sandwich
For the perfect end-of-summer treat, make two waffles instead of one, and sandwich them with a slab of your favorite ice cream flavor.
Topping Idea #5: Chocolate-Dunked
For an after-dinner treat, melt your favorite style of chocolate—ours is semisweet chocolate—over a double boiler. As your water boils, make waffles; once they’re ready, dunk them in melted chocolate and sprinkle them with pistachios, almonds or your choice of chopped nuts. Dessert is served!
Maybe you like the idea of waffles, but in reality they really aren’t your thing. If that’s the case, check out these seven genius things to make with a waffle iron that aren’t actually waffles.
