This post comes to us courtesy of Joe Cross, founder of Reboot Your Life.
Hopefully my post last week stirred something inside you! Maybe you’ve checked out the movie Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead or explored Reboot Your Life. I hope you’re more curious about juicing and feeling adventurous today. I’m not saying you should plunge into a juice fast with me right now (that requires real preparation and planning and is a topic for a future post). I am just suggesting we incorporate a little juice into the mix and see how you like it.
First things first: You are going to need a juicer. Check your cupboards and see if you have a juicer that can take apples, beetroot, carrots and other solid fruits and vegetables. If you don’t – borrow one from a friend or check out these models sold by Williams-Sonoma.
Next you’re going to need some fruits and veggies. Below are some of my favorite recipes. These recipes are easy and are particularly appealing to those who are new to juicing. Head out to the store and pick up provisions for these recipes then follow my simple juicing instructions.
Apple-Pear Juice
1 apple
2 pears
1 thumb-sized piece of ginger
Mean Green Juice
Romaine hearts*
Kale or collard greens*
Spinach*
2 handfuls of parsley
2 to 3 celery stalks
Juice of half a lemon
1 thumb-sized piece of ginger
*Use as much as is required of the greens
Carrot-Kale Combo Juice
1 green apple
2 handfuls spinach
6 to 8 kale leaves
4 large carrots
1 thumb-sized piece of ginger
1 apple
2 beets
3 large carrots
1 thumb-sized piece of ginger
Spinach or kale (optional)
Green Lemonade
1 green apple
3 handfuls spinach
6 to 8 kale leaves
1/2 cucumber
4 celery stalks
Juice of 1/2 lemon
What’s the best way to juice?
- Select fruits or vegetables you’ll be using for your juice.
- Wash thoroughly.
- Cut or tear produce into pieces that will fit in juicer. It’s best to do all the preparation work of preparing your fruits and veggies before you start juicing.
- Turn juicer on and start juicing! Your juicer should be on as you feed the fruits and vegetables through the tube.
- Each juice should be at least 250mL – 500mL.
- If your juicer has more than one speed, don’t forget to shift down from high to low for softer fruits. Most juicers come with a chart in the instruction manual to help guide you on speeds.
- Hard produce like apples or beetroot are processed on high and soft ones like spinach or cabbage are processed on low.

Thanks Joe!
Love your recipes and tips! I’ve tried juicing before and believe in it and need it due to a health condition that I have from an injury 12 years ago that affected my digestion. I need EXACTLY what you do – a juicing ombudsman! to help me along the juicing path! One thing – you don’t specify – that we should keep the leaves on the beets or not – and I know not to peel but some do not know this and to them washing means peeling – for instance in the case of the ginger – to peel or not to peel – THAT is the question? Keep up the great features and recipes! Your site is TERRIFIC and so are YOU!
I begin my juicing tomorrow. Do you drink the juices 3x a day as meal replacements (breakfast lunch dinner) or you drink it as you feel hungry? Do you also (for the 30 day) do the one juice the whol day as it shows days 1-30?

I saw Joe’s DVD the Fat, Sicjk and nearly dead at least one hundred times. Bought a new juicer made by Breville. I am using it for the past one month. I had juice and used to eat lunch and dinner ( salad, and vegetables but not consistent ) Past ten days I am 90 % vegetable juicing 55 FL OZ a day and some soup at dinner time. Lost 6.5 pounds.
Starting today I am 99 % vegetable juicer ( carrots, Kale, Spinach, beet, collard green, cuccumber, tomato, celler, green apple. )
And I drink 8 FL oz of bitter gourd, and indian squash as I get up in the morning.
yes – And work out Five times a week. Cardio and weight training.
I feel great

This is exciting AND scary for me. 🙂 I’m working my way from morbidly obese down to my goal weight…and I’ve lost 14 lbs so far just cutting sugar & diet soda out of my life. Hubby and I bought a juicer last night and I am really hoping I like this. I’m a notoriously picky eater, so I’m feeling a bit pensive about this – but the thought of actually being able to say YES I’m getting all my fruits & veggies for the day is very exciting to me.
We’re going to try our first juice tonight! You can follow my progress at http://www.hotmessprincess.com
I wish all of you happy juicing!
Juicing newbie, we have an upcoming post planned on exactly that subject, so stay tuned!
Dana, we’ve found that berries come out best on speed one with the puree disc, but they’re not “juiced,” they’re definitely pureed (resulting in a more smoothie-like result). Mint and other herbs tend to work best on the regular juicing disc at a low speed, followed immediately by a harder/sturdier fruit; this seems to push the leaves through for best extraction. Good luck!
I have the the Dual Disk Juice Processor from Breville. For some reason when I juice blueberries, blackerries, and mint… nothing comes out. I used speed 1 and 2. Any suggestions?

I’m loving the juice recipes & tips, as I made this a resolution already to get more fruits & vegetables into my diet. I haven’t bought a juicer yet, though. I’m taking baby steps, using my KitchenAid blender (from Williams-Sonoma, of course) and just adding extra fruits to no-sugar cran-something juices OR extra vegetables to Low Sodium V8 juices. So far, so good, but please keep the recipes & inspiration coming! 🙂
What are your thoughts on a blender vs. a juicer? I have a blender, but do you think the added benefits of a juicer justify purchasing one? Thanks.
