This Mother’s Day, more than ever, we want to honor moms for all of the incredible things that they do. Whether it’s your next-door neighbor or your stepsister, there’s one everywhere you turn: the small business owner who teaches her children about being an entrepreneur, the stay-at-home mom who makes organic baby food from scratch, the power broker who still makes time to read to her daughter or son at night.
We asked Katie Hintz-Zambrano and James Kicinski-McCoy, co-founders of Mother and two of the most incredible mothers we know, to tell us about the mothers they most admire, as well as how they plan to honor them come May 8th.
Katie Hintz-Zambrano, San Francisco, California
For my San Francisco girlfriends: Dipped spoons and homemade cookie mix
“I’m lucky to have a really large community of fellow mothers in San Francisco. We all really support each other, emotionally and in a business-sense! I think giving them a homemade cookie mix in a jar, and one of these beautiful dipped spoons would be the perfect token of my affection and appreciation.”
“My mother really deserves it all! She’s the sweetest person I know, a loving mother to her three children, and the best grandmother Diego could ever wish for! She loves to cook, and it would be great to get her something fancy, like a Le Creuset Dutch Oven, along with a healthy eating cookbook.”
For my best friend: Marble and Wood Cheese Board
“My friend Lauren is not only one of my best ‘mom friends,’ she also lives so close to us and is constantly hosting us for Sunday suppers. Her cheese plates are pretty to-die-for, so here’s another pretty marble-and-wood board to add to her collection.”
For my business partner: Star Wars 8-Piece Cookie Cutter Set
“My business partner, James, is a mother to four awesome children, and I really admire how she’s raised them. She’s a huge Star Wars fan (as are her kids), so these cookie cutters would be a nice family activity.”
For myself: Hartwood Cookbook
“Motherhood is a hard job! I think I deserve a little reward for all of the work I put in. I’ve been eyeing this beautiful cookbook for some time. My husband is Mexican-American and I would love to be able to throw down some Mexi cuisine in the kitchen!”
James Kicinski-McCoy, Nashville, Tennessee
For my Nashville girlfriends: Williams-Sonoma One Pot of the Day Cookbook
“I have many lovely mama friends, a.k.a. super moms, in my life who are juggling kids, a career, travel, and much more. Needless to say, making sure that dinner gets on the table every night is quite a task. This book of one pot meals is the perfect gift to help cut down kitchen time without sacrificing taste.”
“One of the most important mothers in my life is my best friend Elise. She is one-of-a-kind, a loving and supportive friend, a wonderful mother, and is truly beautiful inside and out.
“I would love to send her these these Mother’s Day cupcakes to share with her kids, along with this tea gift set, so she can relax, unwind, and enjoy a quiet moment every once in awhile.”
“My friend and neighbor, Emily, recently welcomed a new baby girl to her family. She has a son who is my daughter Birdie’s age, so not only do I want to have him over more often for playdates, so she can get some one-on-one time with her newborn, but I’d also like to leave her with a beautiful delicious selection of cheese, fruit, and nuts to snack on while baby sleeps. Those transitional months, going from a mother one to a mother of two are tough and I think a little help and a decadent cheese board would make her smile.”
For my business partner: Monogrammed Red Cashmere Robe
“My business partner, Katie, is a hard working mama and one of her secrets to keeping it all together is to sneak in a mid-day nap to recharge. We make jokes about her changing into her nap robe, so I think this lux cashmere number would be the perfect addition to her collection. Bonus points for the monogram option!”
For myself: Artisan Hammered Carbon Steel Wok
“I have a lot of picky eaters in my house, which is tough, especially when you love to cook as much as I do. I’ve been on somewhat of a cooking hiatus for the past year or so, but over the last couple of months I have gotten back into the kitchen. I have been dying to get my hands on a wok to take my Sunday dinners to the next level.”
