Mother’s Day is the perfect time for kids to get involved in the kitchen. Whether they surprise Mom with a special treat or the whole family cooks together, preparing meals makes for a fun activity and teaches children skills they’ll use for the rest of their lives.
Even if your kids are young, there are plenty of ways they can help out! Try these creative recipes for your Mother’s Day celebration, from morning to night.
Fill & Flip
Kids will have a blast mixing, filling and watching these Blintz Filled Pancakes come to life. And the flavors are sophisticated enough for Mom to enjoy, too, with creamy ricotta cheese and bright strawberry-rhubarb jam. Looking for a different flavor combination? Crack an Egg
Egg dishes are great for feeding a small group, and best of all, they’re easy to pull off. Try making a springtime frittata, letting kids break the eggs, mix and pour into the pan. Or, try this Bacon and Cheddar Omelette for Six — the little ones will love grating cheese and crumbling the bacon.
Top It Off
There are few sights happier than a kid with whipped cream — even if it makes its way to their clothes and hair! Whip up a few waffles or pancakes and let children be in charge of the toppings (try freshly cut fruit, jam, peanut butter, maple syrup or honey). These Buttermilk Waffles with Honey Whipped Cream will please everyone at the breakfast table.
Be Cheesy
Come lunch or dinner time, show Mom just how much you love her with a special sandwich. Make her favorite Grilled Cheese or another delicious sandwich, and use cookie cutters to create a cute shape.
Mix & Mash
For a snack with tortilla chips or a delicious, homemade taco topper, mix a bowl of guacamole. A potato masher makes easy work of getting the avocados to just the right consistency, and adults can help chop the rest of the veggies.
Make It a Meal
A full meal, from start to finish, doesn’t have to be too complicated for young chefs — and it’s sure to impress Mom on her big day. Begin the meal with a green salad tossed with vinaigrette, then serve this super simple lasagna, made with layers of noodles, ground turkey, sausage, tomato sauce and three kinds of cheeses. For dessert, try this Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake, combining two favorite classics in one sweet dish.
