Meet Kimberley Hasselbrink — recipe developer, food stylist, photographer and creator of the gorgeous (and mouthwatering) blog The Year in Food. We’ve been fans of her work for ages, so we asked Kimberley a few questions to get to know her better. Read on to learn about her favorite ingredients, ideal dinner guests, and party playlists — and don’t forget to look out for her first cookbook next spring!
What’s the story behind the name of your blog?
It happened kind of organically. I had wanted to switch from my old site, 52 Dinners, for a long time, and one day while daydreaming landed on the name The Year in Food. I was so surprised that it hadn’t been registered, so I snapped it up and then didn’t do anything with it for a year and a half.
What’s your favorite recipe on your blog and why?
Toughie! I probably dream of eating these Roasted Strawberry Coconut Milk Popsicles more than anything else on my site.
You’re hosting a dinner party tomorrow night. What would you serve?
Something snacky, like crostini or a white bean dip, to tide people over because I’m always running behind.
A big salad with a crazy mix of greens, some vegetables, probably stone fruit since it’s in season, and feta. Maybe I’d make the salad the star and add a grain, or perhaps some protein. I like kitchen sink-style salads that throw all the odds and ends into the bowl and this is the best time of year for that. Otherwise, a beautiful roast chicken is my go-to. A simple fruit-based dessert or just fruit and cheese. And rosé.
What ingredients do you look forward to the most every year?
There are so many ingredients that I look forward to: asparagus, berries, figs, sungold cherry tomatoes, pluots, cherries, delicata squash. It’s always the beginning of the season that excites me the most.
What do you eat when you’re alone?
Lots of toast, lots of eggs and lots of produce.
Who’s your ideal dinner guest?
A great storyteller; someone totally hilarious and perhaps a little disarmingly honest, like my friend Octavian. He keeps things interesting. Anyone who volunteers to wash dishes.
What’s on your dinner playlist?
I like playing old soul because it’s classy and celebratory and hangs out in the background making everyone feel good.
What’s the first food blog you look at every day, besides your own?
I don’t look at very many food blogs right now, because I’m so busy with my own work. But I’m always excited for new posts from these folks: Sprouted Kitchen, Eat This Poem, Happyolks, Delightful Crumb, Seven Spoons, Lottie and Doof and Bon Appetempt.
