Classic cocktails and savory small bites will get any party started. You can’t go wrong with a traditional Manhattan, especially our version, which was created by the experts at Schiller’s Liquor Bar in Manhattan. A splash of orange-flavored liqueur lends a complex sweetness that takes it to the next level. Offer a French 75, too — its lively bubbles make a wonderful aperitif.
For snacks, serve two types of canapes. These toasts with thin slices of beef tenderloin and a dollop of horseradish cream are hearty and special-occasion worthy, while bites of crab and cucumber taste rich but refreshing. Round out the hors d’oeuvre selection with sweet-salty prosciutto-wrapped figs and a bowl of candied mixed nuts.
- 1 day ahead: Cook the beef and refrigerate. Make the toasts for the crostini and store in an airtight container at room temperature. Make the horseradish cream and refrigerate. Stuff and wrap the figs, place on a baking sheet, cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Toast the mixed nuts and let cool; place in an airtight container at room temperature. Make the simple syrup for the French 75.
- Day of: Allow the horseradish cream and the figs to come to room temperature.
- Just before serving: Bake the figs. Re-warm the nuts and finish with herbs. Assemble both canapes. Mix the cocktails.

A well-stocked bar is essential. We’re partial to this bar cart, which is as elegant as it is functional. The roomy shelves are perfect for displaying spirits, decanters, ice buckets, shakers and special glassware (we love these copper mugs)! And don’t forget a good set of tools for mixing.
Stir or shake drinks with confidence! We talked to the expert bartenders at Schiller’s to learn their tips for making classic cocktails at home — read on, and start mixing.
