Whether you’re having a few friends over for a casual get-together or hosting a formal seated dinner, a tablecloth adds a visual backdrop to any occasion that you’re hosting. Think of it as the primer to any table: It sets the mood and the tone of the meal.
Shopping for tablecloths can be confusing, however. Not only do they come in a range of colors and prints, but they’re also available in a wide spectrum of shapes and sizes. To make the process as painless as possible, follow these steps to calculate the size of tablecloth you should be buying. Plus, keep reading for the easiest tablecloth sizing cheat sheet you’ll ever see!
How to Buy the Right-Sized Tablecloth
Here’s how to calculate your ideal tablecloth size, no matter how small or large your table is.
- Get your table ready to be sized. This seems obvious, but we’ll bring it up anyway: If you have an extendable table with leaves, make sure to extend or shrink your table to the size you’ll be using before you measure your table for linens. For a casual tablecloth, this will probably be the table size you use most frequently. If you’re hosting a formal dinner, it’ll be the dimensions you plan to use for your special occasion.
- Calculate your tabletop dimensions. Measure both table length and width. For either, this is most easily accomplished by measuring from the center of your table outward, then multiplying the measurement by two.
- Factor in the “drop” you want. Determine the desired length of your tablecloth drop (how far over your table you want the cloth to hang). At Williams Sonoma, we consider the standard to be 10 inches. Anything less than six will make your table look out of proportion and your linens too small. You can also extend your drop for a more formal look, but if you do this, you should measure the difference between the table and the chairs to see what will look good when chairs are pushed under the table without gathering too much fabric or draping on your guests’ laps.
- Do a little table math. For a rectangular table, multiple your desired drop by two, then add on the actual measurements of the table. For example, if you’re going for a 10-inch drop and your table is 68 inches long, your mathematical equation would be 10 (the desired drop, in inches) multiplied by 2 (to factor in both sides of the table) with 68 (the length of your table) added. Thus, your desired tablecloth length would be 88 inches.
- For a round table, tweak the formula. For a round table, calculate the size slightly differently. You’ll want to multiple your desired drop by two, then measure the table through its diameter from one side to the other, adding that to the total number. For instance, if your round table has a 50-inch diameter and you want a 10-inch drop, your calculation would be (10 x 2) + 50, which equals 70. Your desired tablecloth size would be a 70-inch round.
- If you don’t find the exact size that you want, don’t panic! Should you have a hard time finding the exact size you want, then simply size up to the next available size.

The best (and longest) size of Thanksgiving tablecloth we carry for your table is 70″ x 144″. Yet, that would give you a tablecloth with a drop (overhang) of 14″ on each side and only 1 inch at the ends. Another company may have a longer tablecloth, or we would suggest using two 70 x 90 tablecloths and arranging them with an equal drop on all sides.

A 42″ x 91″ table with a 10″ drop would need a tablecloth of 62″ x 101″. The standard tablecloth width is 70″, which would give you a drop at the sides of 14.” We would recommend a length of 108 (allowing a 81/2 drop at the ends) or a length of 126″ (allowing a drop of 18 1/2″ drop at the ends).

You show calculations for adding 10” per side of a table to pick out a table cloth. I have a table 42” x 68”, with one insert it’s 42” x 82”, with 2 inserts it’s 42” x 96”. I want the same drop on all 4 sides so where do I buy 66 x 92, etc? Or a longer drop but same for all sides. A round tablecloth is the same all around, of course, which looks attractive. Why aren’t there more options for rectangular tables. Not all tables are the same width. That could be true to length too. Bottom line – I want my tablecloths the same drop length on all 4 sides. Help!

I am looking for what I thought was once known as an oblong tablecloth, however, today oblong appears to be synonymous with rectangular. I have a 38 inch round table with a 36 X 38-inch straight rectangular section between the semispherical ends so it is not a true ellipse, so an oval tablecloth does not drape correctly. (the table is a gate leg drop leaf with round drops)

my OVAL table is 102 1/2″ x 66 inches plus the 10″ drop
I have an oval Ethan Allen dining table. Unless you can buy the exact size with the exact drop all around then I would say buy an oval tablecloth. However, I have an average size table, and to me, nothing fits or looks as nice as an oblong fabric tablecloth on an oval table. The four corners hang ever so nicely and looks really beautiful.

Yes, it is a serious oversight not to offer square tablecloths. This would not happen in Paris where an intimate dinner for two is romantic, and not considered a loss in profitability. Shame on Williams Sonoma. Yet another reason for me to simply shop at a commercial restaurant supply house.
