What eatery makes the best doughnuts in the world? That’s the question we were hoping to answer when we put a query out to all of you on Facebook, Instagram and here on the blog. Given that there are over 7,500 doughnut shops in America, we didn’t expect to reach a definitive conclusion, but many of you made a pretty compelling case for why your favorite spot should be a contender for the title. Below are five of top can’t-miss doughnut spots in America.

Angela S. of Atlanta wrote us to say, “I have had most all of the donuts from the above bakeries [mentioned in the comments]. Hands down the best donut I have had is from a little place called Five Daughters Bakery in Nashville. Their donuts have 100 layers and are made fresh each day. My very favorite is the Quinn and the orange blossom. Out of this world—worth a drive from Atlanta to Nashville just for one of these babies!”

Kayla J.’s vote goes to Sky Top Orchard in the mountains of western North Carolina. “Sky Top Orchard has the best apple cider doughnuts ever!” she wrote on Facebook. “The line is always very long, but this is a sign that they’re very good and obviously worth the wait. You can smell the cinnamon from the doughnuts when you arrive. The doughnuts come out warm and have the smell of sweet cinnamon. Nothing better than eating a warm doughnut that basically dissolves in your mouth as you devour it. We usually buy two dozen for our family of four, because they’re so dang good. I look forward to it every year!”

Lisa C.’s hands-down favorite is Kane’s Donuts in Saugus, MA. “The Bismark is my favorite: It’s a long jelly stick, crunchy on the outside, cut down the middle with fresh whipped cream, then topped with powered sugar. To die for. I drive from Maine to Saugus, MA to get one! The coffee is great, too—definitely worth the wait in line!

Jennifer O.’s favorite shop is Top Donuts in Watsonville, CA. She writes, “It is owned by a husband and wife who do it all themselves. They have the best doughnuts and are the nicest people you will ever meet. Sometimes things like apple fritters can be greasy, but not theirs. I love their buttermilk bars. And you can get a glazed twist that is almost a foot long!”
